About me & my books

I am Cliewe Juritza and I was born in 1966 in Berlin-Friedrichshain (East-Berlin). I grew up in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, in the Helmholtz quarter.
After some fruitless attempts to escape from the GDR, I was arrested in 1984 at the age of 18 and sentenced to twelve moth in prison. After ten month in the prisons of Gotha, Berlin-Rummelsburg and Halle, I was bought to freedom by the Federal Republic of Germany and released from the GDR. In spring 1989 I started to study political sciences in West-Berlin.

 
After the fall of the Wall, I moved back to Prenzlauer Berg. I worked for the Berlin Senate of Urban Development and organized architectural invitations to tender, e.g. the competition of the chancellery and the federal presidents' office. Me and some fellow students run the Café "Staatsrat" in the former GDR State Council Building at the Schloßplatz. Later I worked as a free lance journalist and in the press department of McDonald's Germany. Since January 2007 I am a tour guide in Berlin and also guide in the Memorial Berlin-Hohenschönhausen. In my book , I described my escape attempts, the time in prison and my return to Berlin.

    Als meine Mutter diese Nachricht von mir las, hat sie sich sicher nicht vorstellen können, dass sie mich das nächste Mal im Besuchsraum der Haftanstalt Halle wieder sehen würde, weil ich versucht hatte, die DDR zu verlassen.
